Experiment 30

Give a tool a home

What does it involve?

Give each piece of tech an official home where it lives so that you can be intentional when to use it. Spend some time each day returning things to their proper place.

From batch 4 of our weekly series of Lab Tests

Each week we release two new experiments from the Digital Habit Lab, launching on Kickstarter later this year.

Why do it?

  • Reduce distraction—studies show that simply having your phone out and visible on your desk is enough to add significant cognitive load to your brain as it tries to concentrate on other things. By having a place that you routinely put it away out of sight you can improve your ability to focus on what you want to be doing.
  • Stay in flow—There is nothing more frustrating than being inspired to do some work or create something only to be held up by missing bits of equipment, or battery that isn't charged properly. By habitually putting your devices away and storing them you can make sure they are ready and waiting for when you need them most.
  • Reduce stress—There is something very powerful about a clean and organised workspace. By taking the time to put things away you are not only cleaning up your environment, but also your mind. This clarity of mind can reduce stress and make you feel in control.

  • Experiment regularly with how and where you store your tools around you so that you can perfect your workspace over time.
  • Don't get caught in the trap of thinking everything needs to be perfectly clean and tidy, just do enough to reset a space back to it's original state and then carry on.
